Ooh what about English dub voices you like/abhor with a passion?
Noting that I haven’t seen dub stuff past R:
My favourite dub voices would be Raye and Lita. They both have great comedic timing and while Raye never gets the opportunity to show a whole lot of range (“grouchy” and “sarcastic” being about as far as Raye is allowed to go), Lita’s able to run the gamut. I also quite liked both the first and second Serenas (cannot remember the actresses names at this point), though I think the second could do more … or, at least, had the opportunity to show more what she could do.
I think I would’ve liked dub Luna’s voice a whole lot more if they could’ve kept up the British Nanny interpretation (which actually works REALLY WELL for Luna) without making her lapse into embarrassing slang. I mean when Dub!Luna starts whipping out the unironic “meatball heads” and other pseudovalley speak, I just cringe.
Oh! And Dub!Zoicite. ALL THE LOVE for Dub!Zoicite. I hate that they wiped out a canonically gay character, but good lord did Zoi rock it. She was fantastic.
AND MOLLY. CANNOT EVER FORGET MOLLY. Though that’s totally swung the pendulum into “so bad it’s good” territory. Just … why that accent. Why did that happen. Who cares just be glad it did. SAHREENAH. ♥♥♥
Voices I hated!
I HAVE heard a little tiny bit of the later Serena and OH MY GOD JUST NO. It sounds like she wanted to be an opera singer and tripped and accidentally landed in voice acting instead. (This opinion is based on approximately two minutes of listening. That was enough.)
I really don’t care for Amy’s voice either, though interestingly enough I hated it MORE when I watched the dub of the R movie and it wasn’t what I was used to. So I guess Amy’s just kinda screwed for me. She sounds like she has a perpetual head cold though, and all I want to do is give her some Nyquil and put her to bed.
For true loathing though, NOTHING beats Darien and Rini.
Oh my god do I hate those two.
I hated Darien so much it took 15 years and conscious effort on my part to stop hating Mamoru. The writing has a lot to do with that, but the way he delivered the lines just … just no. There’s nothing that isn’t either patronizing, mean, or just plain BAD. Honestly it gives me a much better appreciation for what Tohru Furuya is able to do; the only way those speeches work is if they’re SINCERE, and not a single Darien was able to pull it off.
As for Rini. I liked exactly ONE THING Rini ever said, and that was the “Rain or shine I’m happiest when I’m with Tuxedo Mask” song. That was pretty adorable. But otherwise? That voice single-handedly ruined an entire English-speaking generation on a character. Well done, DiC. Well done.
