Okay, you asked.
Going under a cut. This isn’t really a cheerful one.
BUT YOU ASKED.
Rei dies first. It begins much the same way that Mako’s death did. They’re running, and Rei says “hell with this” and confronts the enemies. She’s powering up a Fire Soul when they swarm her. They’re electrocuting her, but Rei’s resistance to electricity isn’t like Mako’s. She holds out as long as possible, trying to build up as much power as she can. She’s not able to get to the levels she might otherwise though, and she only manages to take out one, who is unfortunately not the leader.
The others are completely stunned and Usagi’s losing it fast. Rei tries to tell Usagi to stay strong. She’s hurt so badly though, and she can’t get out more than Usagi’s name before she dies.
Usagi is shattered. Whatever Rei might have been wanting to say, Usagi could only hear her pain and feel Rei die with her name on her lips. She gives up completely, calling out to Beryl to just take the ginzuishou. Mako is FURIOUS. She’s doesn’t strike Usagi, but is so angry with her that a slap couldn’t have hurt more. “These fuckers killed Rei and I’m not stopping until every last one of them pays.”
With only one casualty, the DD Girls have regrouped quickly and are already coming back for another attack. Mako runs to meet them head-on, heedless of the others pleading with her not to. Ami is especially desperate. If only she could have time to analyze them! Usagi is near hysterical watching Mako run off and can’t stop looking at Rei dead, just feet away. It’s all gotten out of control too fast, and they have to run. Minako insists they leave now, with or without Mako.
Ami and Usagi fight her, not wanting to leave her behind. Minako drags them away. The Princess is all that matters. Jupiter’s given us a chance and we have to take it.
Mako meanwhile is in a rage. The DD Girls taunt her with more illusions — this time of her friends, dead and dying, calling out for her to help them. As intended, she’s distracted, but still she manages to lay her hands on one of the youma. She kills it with her bare hands. The othes surround her though, and attack with their spikes. It’s the one that bursts Mako’s heart that ultimately kills her.
Minako’s been reduced to having to carry Usagi. Along with Ami trying to keep pace while trying to find some kind of solution on her computer means that they’re not moving anywhere near quick enough. The DD Girls find them again within seconds of killing Mako; her blood is still dripping from their hands.
Minako has to put Usagi down to fight them. Usagi’s pleading for everyone to just give up, and Minako yells that they can’t ever do that. But Usagi’s beyond listening. Ami’s trying to find an answer, and Minako knows that the only way they can hope to win is if Ami succeeds, but her attention is split between trying to protect Ami, Usagi and herself. The DD Girls exploit this, and distract Minako long enough to take out Ami. Naturally, just as she was about to reveal vital information. Minako is enraged, but uses that rage on the youma that killed Ami, slicing it in two with her Crescent Beam.
But there are still two other DD Girls, and they simultaneously attack Usagi. Minako sees this just in time and is able to save Usagi, but only by taking their hits herself. She’s impaled and they overload her with energy; Minako’s only able to scream as she dies.
This leaves two DD Girls, including the illusion-creating leader, against Usagi. An Usagi who is completely broken. From the start it’s been all her fault. Rei died because Usagi kept falling for the same illusion, and she’s certain Rei’s last words were how Usagi failed. Everyone died blaming her. All because of this stupid crystal and stupid destiny she never wanted.
When her friends call out to her, Usagi is overjoyed. They shouldn’t be here, she knows that, but she can SEE them. They’re all okay. In their eyes she sees their love. She sees their forgiveness.
"Cheer up, Usagi," Mako says.
"It was just a test, and you passed!" Ami looks so proud.
"Everything’s gonna be okay now," Minako promises with a wink.
"You know I can’t ever leave you." Rei shakes her head and smiles. "What would you do without me?"
Mamoru is there too. They’re all waiting for her. When he opens his arms, she doesn’t hesitate to run into them.
Usagi is dead within seconds.
But she dies with a smile on her face.
