Okay so YES. Mako has every possible kind of rough edge to her here, and LOVE.
The show’s gone and given Mako a friend, kind of, retroactively, But it’s also going to clear lengths to show how different that tentative friendship is to what she found with Usagi and the others.
At this point, Mako still has all of her anger, and it colours everything. She can’t even sound nice and encouraging here. All she’s meaning to say is “I’m interested in your story and I want to read it”, but it comes out as ”Shut up!” Even here, with this potential friendship, Mako really doesn’t know how to do it. This angry girl is all she knows how to be now.
Given how we saw present-day Mako react to Tomoko, I’m going to guess this is a constant throughout their relationship (however brief). And I just LOVE how coming back here, going back into Mako’s past, it’s bringing up all these old behaviours. It’s making it so clear that Usagi was truly Mako’s turning point into being the person she was supposed to be, while still letting her have this history where more was possible, if either Mako or her circumstances allowed it.
